The Days of the Week as Planetary Rhythms

The Days of the Week as Planetary Rhythms

23/10/2024

Each day carries a distinct quality.
Not as an abstract idea but as a felt difference in mood, capacity and tone.

Most of us already know this intuitively.
Monday feels different to Friday.
Saturday does not ask the same things of us as Wednesday.

What’s less commonly acknowledged is that the days of the week are named after the planets and each day carries a specific energetic emphasis. When you understand this, the week becomes less about pushing evenly and more about placing things where they naturally belong.

This is how I work with it.

Monday – Ruled by the Moon

The Moon’s influence is strongest on Mondays, making it a day of heightened emotion, sensitivity and internal movement. In astrology and traditional systems, the Moon governs the fluid body emotions, memory, hormones, and rhythm.

This is not a day designed for force.
It’s a day for attunement.

Emotions may surface more quickly. Energy can fluctuate. Rather than resisting this, I treat Monday as a day to listen inward and set the tone gently.

Supportive practices

  • Wear white or pearl tones to support calm and receptivity
  • Begin the day with journalling, meditation or quiet reflection
  • Honour emotional responses without over-identifying with them
  • Avoid overexertion – pushing here often costs more later

Tea / herb: nettle or oat straw (mineral, restorative)
Sound: slow extended exhale
Affirmation: “I allow restoration to lead.”

Tuesday – Ruled by Mars

Tuesday is governed by Mars, the planet of vitality, drive and decisive action. This is where momentum naturally returns after the inward pull of Monday.

Mars is often misunderstood as aggressive or volatile but at its core it governs courage, direction and clean action. Tuesdays are particularly supportive for athletic pursuits, research and tasks that require focus and resolve.

This is a day to move but with honour and right intention.

Supportive practices

  • Wear red, especially if you are pitta-dosha dominant
  • Be proactive with tasks that require decision-making
  • Engage the body through exercise or purposeful movement
  • Channel intensity into clarity, not conflict

Tea / herb: ginger or tulsi (warming, circulatory)
Sound: firm nasal breath
Affirmation: “I move forward with clarity and integrity.”

Wednesday – Ruled by Mercury

Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, governing communication, learning, trade, and mental processing. This is the most cognitively agile day of the week.

Conversation flows more easily. Ideas connect faster. This is an excellent day for meetings, writing, business correspondence and problem-solving.

Mercury also governs the nervous system, so mental spaciousness matters here.

Supportive practices

  • Schedule meetings, send emails and communicate clearly
  • Journal or write to organise thoughts and intentions
  • Learn something new or refine an existing skill
  • Avoid overstimulation – clarity thrives in simplicity

Tea / herb: peppermint or lemon balm (nervine, clarifying)
Sound: gentle humming
Affirmation: “My mind is clear. My communication is precise.”

Thursday – Ruled by Jupiter

Thursday carries the expansive influence of Jupiter – planet of growth, wisdom and abundance. This is a day oriented toward the bigger picture.

Jupiter supports optimism, faith, learning and long-term vision. Efforts made on Thursdays tend to feel supported rather than strained.

I also find this an ideal day to work with finances not from urgency but from perspective.

Supportive practices

  • Wear yellow to support optimism and expansion
  • Reflect on long-term goals and direction
  • Engage in spiritual study, yoga, or meditation
  • Practise gratitude and generosity

Tea / herb: licorice root or chamomile (harmonising, supportive)
Sound: relaxed low exhale
Affirmation: “I am supported by a wider intelligence.”

Friday – Ruled by Venus

Friday is governed by Venus, planet of beauty, pleasure, creativity and relationship. This is a day where connection with others or with oneself feels more accessible.

Venus is not excess. It’s refinement.

This is an ideal day for art, romance, self-care and anything that restores pleasure without guilt.

Supportive practices

  • Prioritise enjoyment and aesthetic nourishment
  • Wear white, soft pinks, purples or tones that feel luxurious
  • Spend time with loved ones or engage in creative expression
  • Allow pleasure to be restorative rather than performative

Tea / herb: rose or hibiscus (heart-supportive)
Sound: breath into the chest
Affirmation: “I allow pleasure to nourish me.”

Saturday – Ruled by Saturn

Saturday carries the grounded, disciplined energy of Saturn. This is the day for structure, responsibility, and long-term integrity.

Saturn asks for honesty. What you tend to here becomes stable.

This is a supportive day for organisation, review and closing loops not with punishment but with maturity.

Supportive practices

  • Wear darker or neutral tones like black or navy
  • Clean, organise and simplify your environment
  • Review goals and make practical adjustments
  • Choose grounding practices like slow walks or restorative yoga

Tea / herb: dandelion root or burdock (grounding, structural)
Sound: quiet nasal breathing or silence
Affirmation: “I build what lasts.”

Sunday – Ruled by the Sun

Sunday is governed by the Sun, source of vitality, coherence and self-expression. This is a day for restoration through joy rather than collapse.

The Sun restores by reminding the system of its own centre.

This is a day for light, creativity, and reconnecting with purpose.

Supportive practices

  • Wear gold, orange or warm tones
  • Spend time outdoors in natural light
  • Practise gratitude and gentle intention-setting
  • Engage in creative expression without outcome pressure

Tea / herb: calendula or green tea (solar, uplifting)
Sound: natural sound or open laughter
Affirmation: “I return to my centre.”

The week is not meant to be flattened into sameness.
Each day has a role. When you respect that, life becomes less about effort
and more about alignment and placement.
